The Penny Is Gone. Your POS Is Ready: Automatic Cash Rounding is now live in Dripos
The U.S. Mint halted the production of the penny for general circulation in late 2025, a historic move driven by the fact that the coin had long cost more to manufacture than its actual face value. The U.S. follows in the footsteps of more than 25 countries in eliminating their lowest denomination coin due to low purchasing power. While a savvy fiscal decision, it is important to recognize that this has led to new operational hurdles for businesses that handle cash transactions.
While the economy continues to trend towards digital payments, cash is still a vital component of daily commerce that is not going anywhere. We at Dripos believe that your POS operating system should seamlessly support every way your customers choose to pay, which is why we have prioritized a solution that eliminates cash-handling friction caused by the “death of the cent”.
We are proud to be an industry leader in the POS space with the release of a fully operational Automatic Cash Rounding feature. After listening to feedback from our customers and business owners across the country, we have dedicated our efforts to streamlining your operational workflows to ensure your business remains efficient in a rapidly evolving economy.
Anyone who has closed out a register after a busy shift knows the frustration of a drawer that won’t balance. A discrepancy of just a few cents can derail reporting, wasting valuable time and causing unnecessary stress in trying to balance the drawer. When managers have to spend an extra 20 minutes hunting down a three-cent discrepancy or dealing with coin shortages from the bank, that is real labor cost eating into your bottom line.
Many current POS solutions require manual intervention for cash adjustments by forcing staff to calculate rounding on the fly or create custom categories to balance the cash drawer. We have bypassed those steps entirely and instead perform the rounding calculations on your behalf!
Here's how it works:

After simply enabling the “Cash Rounding” setting in the Dashboard, the rounding logic will be directly integrated into the transaction flow:
- Rounding Down: When a customer checks out, if the cash total ends in 1, 2, 6, or 7, that value is automatically rounded down to the nearest nickel. (For example, a $4.52 total becomes $4.50).
- Rounding Up: If the cash total ends in 3, 4, 8, or 9, that value is automatically rounded up to the nearest nickel. (For example, a $4.58 total becomes $4.60).

"Cash Rounding" is marked as an individual line item on the POS, customer receipts and sales reports to provide a transparent audit trail for revenue reporting and simplified cash drawer reconciliation. Say farewell to on-the-fly mental gymnastics, searching for pennies that may not exist in your drawer, and awkward pauses at the counter. Welcome to an era of straightforward and transparent transactions!
We remain committed to building tools that respect the reality of your operations, ensuring that whether a transaction is digital or physical, your POS is the smartest tool in the room.
This feature was a massive team effort – huge thanks to Ayden Wells on our Success team for driving the initial requirements and our stellar Engineering team for building it and bringing it to life.
